I’d like to say that we’re off like a herd of gazelles but really, we’re more of a herd of turtles. We are very proud of our completed books and happy to have them available to the public but self-publishing comes with its own unique challenges. The problem we are facing now is how does a group of introverts get out there and market themselves? We can only sell so many books to friends and family before we become persona non grata and no one invites us to dinner. We don’t want to be “those people.”
I have to take a step back and realize that this is only day one. We’re in a marathon, not a sprint. And that if the product is good (as we hope it is) then the sales will come. My brother and mother both laughed at me last night during our Skype call because I said I’d be happy if we sold nothing. I just like to write. They are right to laugh. What’s the point of telling a kickass story and no one reads it. If a tree falls in the forest……
Our next step in our journey is to continue to self-promote via Facebook and our blog. We’ll also be joining the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) Select program. It seems tailor-made for us as we are brand new to the business, we have a miniscule fan base, and we’re not the best at promoting ourselves. We’ll give it the mandatory three months and see how it goes. We figure, even if it fails spectacularly, we’ve still only tied up our books for half the time they would have been sitting in a brick and mortar publisher’s mailroom, waiting on their current intern to review the tiny bit of material you get to submit. It feels like that route all depends on who’s looking through the submissions that day and hoping they’ve had their coffee, they don’t have exams the next day or that they broke up with their significant other and in general, that they’re having a good day and like what they see enough to ask for more. We ain’t getting any younger and don’t want to tie our material up for the next few years in the hopes of winning the publishing lottery. This way, we control our fate.
If you do take a chance and buy one or more of our books and you like it, please, help us poor shut-ins and give it a shout out to your friends and family. We’d do the same for you.
Have a great day,
